The New CPA Exam, Layoffs, and the Top Twitter Feeds in Accounting

By Julie Steinberg
Abacus users, take note. Whether getting raided by police in Iceland or getting downsized in New York, it's been an exciting week for accountants. FINS examines the new CPA exam, two new lists of important firms and the people who run them, and companies that have embraced Twitter.

Getting Schooled
The American Institute of CPAs deemed January 1, 2011 as the launch of the CBT-e, the revved-up, technologically enhanced version of the CPA exam. The exam will include questions about International Financial Reporting Standards, so brush up on your EBITDA.

Go Small or Go Home
Meanwhile, Crain released a list of the 25 largest accounting firms in New York. According to the report, the number of New York-area professionals at these firms fell by 7%. And while nine firms increased their ranks over the period, nearly twice as many did the opposite, including the Big Four (KPMG led with with a decrease of 13%, letting go of 681 employees).

People We'd Like to Meet
On the upside, Accounting Today released its annual list of the Top 100 Most Influential People and it's no surprise that industry gods like Barry Salzberg (CEO of Deloitte) and Robert Herz (chairman of FASB) graced the pages.

What is more unexpected is the number of public figures on the list -- Tim Geithner, Chuck Grassley and Barney Frank all made an appearance, illustrating the extent to which the government has sunk its teeth into the financial world.

Our favorite pick? Bernie Madoff, inmate number included. The mag is quick to point out that influential doesn't necessarily mean sunshine and unicorns.

Twitter Central
Finally, accounting firms are jumping on the Twitter bandwagon and posting all sorts of fun things, including job announcements.

Here's our list of the top nine best accounting firm Twitter feeds. Follow these handles to get the jump on the industry, company info and job opportunities:
