The death of Wall Street legend Bruce Wasserstein has left a huge hole in the industry's deal-making ranks and at Lazard Ltd. where he had been chief executive since 2005. Steven J. Golub has been appointed interim chief executive officer and is most likely to be named Wasserstein's replacement, according to The Wall Street Journal. There are other contenders at the firm, from both Lazard's old guard and the senior bankers who had followed Wasserstein when he joined the company in 2002. And Wasserstein appeared to be grooming future talent to be company leaders with certain recent promotions. It's unlikely that his replacement would be hired from the outside, the paper reports.
Santander U.K. is on its way to become a full-service commercial bank -- and is planning hires as part of its expansion. The bank, a unit of Spain's Banco Santander SA, is hunting for 600 workers for bank branches in the U.K.
