Cocktail Networking Doesn't Work for PIMCO Star

FINSwire Team

Hate small talk? You might fit in well at Pacific Investment Management Co.

PIMCO bond guru Bill Gross hasn't been to a cocktail party in more than 10 years. In his recent Investment Outlook column, he vented his distaste for social-circuit blather.

"Ninety seconds into a typical conversation, no one gives a damn about you and your problems," he wrote. He even included a "Cocktail Party Empathy Chart," graphing how his interest in a conversation plummets as the seconds tick by. It's a straight, steep line down to "Don't Care."

And don't even think of networking with the bond star. Here's his take on such connecting: "…if the doe-eyed listener seems simply fascinated by what you're saying, you can bet there's a requested personal favor coming when you finally shut up."

He says he'd rather be watching Seinfeld reruns. Just as well. Left Coasters have to be early risers to wake up with New York.

Tip of the hat to Investment News for surfacing the column.
