Now that financial regulation reform has a chance of passing, compliance has never been so important. It will be up to compliance officers to ensure that their companies meet all the new demands -- whether at an investment bank or a PE shop.
If you're looking to keep up with the latest on all the new decrees or just a little cyber-networking, here's a guide to online communities for compliance officers.
You've heard by now that you have to join LinkedIn, so after you've created your profile, jump on over to these three compliance groups.
-- Financial Services Compliance Professionals is the largest group -- more than 900 members. It brings together compliance professionals from an assortment of financial institutions.
-- The Forum for Chief Compliance Officers & Chief Risks Officers is smaller -- 200 members -- and geared to compliance and regulatory risk managers at commercial banks, mutual funds, pension funds, insurance companies and asset-management companies.
-- Broker Dealer, Investment Advisor Compliance Officers brings together, you guessed it, BD and IA compliance officers -- and has nearly 700 members. It's run by compliance recruiter and blogger Stuart Rosenthal (see below).
While taking breaks from poking your third-grade classmates, you'll be able to find compliance pros on Facebook.
-- ComplianceHeadquarters, with about 800 fans, is the outpost of ComplianceHeadquarters.com, a Web site offering updates on regulatory compliance happenings from Wolters Kluwer Financial Services, a compliance software and services company owned by a multinational publisher and information-services company Wolters Kluwer.
-- BrokeandBroker, a blog run by Bill Singer, a high-profile securities attorney who represents whistleblowers, broker-dealers and investors.
-- Corporate Compliance Insights offers a job board, articles and a forum for pressing compliance matters. It's from Conselium, an executive-search firm focusing on corporate compliance, audit and information-technology security.
-- Compliance Oversights is maintained by Rosenthal, the owner of the Broker Dealer, Investment Advisor Compliance Officers LinkedIn group. Rosenthal, a former compliance officer-turned-recruiter, gives a recruiter's perspective on compliance hiring.
Regulators are tweeting updates, but don't expect to glean any additional insights into their inner workings. They're extremely official.
-- @SEC_News pushes out headlines and links to its press releases, mostly on enforcement actions, investor education tips and alerts, meetings, new areas for staff reviews and other communiqués.
-- @SEC_Jobs can give you a jump on the agency's job postings.
-- @FINRA_News is similar to the SEC's news feed. Just don't expect anything in the way of juicy gossip.
