The Retail Marketing Push Goes Online

By sindhu sundar

With customers getting more of their product information online, in-store advertising has lost some relevance. With this in mind, advertisers are pooling their talent, sometimes among each other, to bulk up their online advertising efforts to woo online shoppers offline, into stores and down the path to a purchase. WPP ad shops JWT and Ogilvy & Mather have teamed up to create a new agency, focused on baiting customers online.

The joint venture currently has 3,400 staff across its U.S. offices and will continue to seek ad talent in the next year, according to a JWT spokesperson.

In the meantime, companies looking to diversify their talent pool increasingly strike strategic partnerships as they look for ad talent savvy about consumers' online habits. A logical move, as brands' online ad spending surpasses print ad expenditure.

1. Build new skills that will help you land your dream job

2. Commit "career adultery," i.e., put your resume up on LinkedIn and signal your interest to new employers

3. Mix things up at the office -- change your desk arrangement or try to work from home once in a while, if that's an option.
