Accounting Firms to Hire More Graduates in 2011

By finswire team

The market for entry-level accountants is looking bright this spring.

Some 71% of accounting firms with more than 200 employees anticipate hiring more graduates in 2011 than they did last year, according to a report released this morning by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

But supply is growing as well. The number of students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate accounting programs swelled from 212,834 in the 2007/2008 academic year to 226,108 in the 2009/2010 period, a 6.2% increase.

And accounting firms are demanding more credentials as well. Some 40% of graduates hired last year by CPA firms held Master's degrees, up from only one quarter two years earlier.
