Hiring for Wealth Management, IT and in Canada

By julie steinberg

Tip: Jobseekers Should Look North

The finance industry in Toronto is expanding after years of contraction. Royal Bank of Canada and Ernst & Young are relying on top university graduates as a "critical pipeline," and M.B.A. students aren't doing too shabbily, either. Trading desks still aren't picking up new recruits too quickly, but wealth management is seeing particular growth in the country.

Tip: RBC Wealth Management Wants You

Royal Bank of Canada's wealth management division wants to double its financial adviser headcount in Latin America and Asia to at least 220 by 2015. It will hire 60 advisers in Britain and between 25 and 50 FAs each year in Canada. If relocating isn't an option, you can try for one of the financial advising gigs opening up in the U.S., though it's not immediately clear how many the bank intends to hire.

Tip: Global Banks Prowling for IT Staff

Banks are expected to spend $2 billion over the next two years implementing new trading platforms that will require qualified talent to run them. Demand for banking IT contractors has almost doubled over the past three months, and banks are planning to bring on permanent employees, too. The demand is pushing up salaries for lucky applicants, who can now expect to make a few hundred thousand dollars a year if they manage between 80 and 100 people.
