Credit Suisse Snags Merrill's Gaertner for Tech Banking

By julie steinberg

Bank of America Merrill Lynch's Chris Gaertner is joining Credit Suisse's technology, media and telecom investment banking group, according to an internal memo.

Gaertner becomes a managing director and head of global corporate finance for the TMT group. He was a managing director in the technology group at Merrill.

Gaertner's hire reflects Credit Suisse's focus on technology investment banking. Last year, equity analyst star Imran Khan joined the Swiss bank from J.P. Morgan. While at BofA, Gaertner advised on Hewlett-Packard's $11 billion acquisition of British software firm Autonomy Corp.

Gaertner will be based in San Francisco and report to David Wah and Mark Simonian, global co-heads of the TMT Group, effective in July.

Gaertner worked at BofA Merrill Lynch since May 2005 in various roles, including head of technology investment banking, head of software group Americas and global head of software group. He was at Lehman Brothers from 1999 through 2005 and Dillon Read & Co./UBS from 1993 through 1999 in technology investment banking.

Gaertner received his bachelor's degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, an M.B.A. from Wharton and a Master of Science in Electric Engineering from Columbia.
