Is Eastman Kodak in its final death throes?
After 131 years in business, Kodak is so desperate for cash it's now trying to sell its imaging patents. Employment is in a similarly dismal state, with its numbers dwindling to 18,800 last year from almost three times that in 2004.
In 2001, Kodak ranked No. 27 on list of best global brands compiled by Interbrand Corp., which ranks brand strength. Last year, it didn't even make the list of the top 100.
Kodak has product problems. But it also has a brand commitment problem. It never really reinvented itself as a digital leader when the era of film ended. Now, it's trying to jump into a printer business dominated by better-known players. (Rival Hewlett-Packard Co. was No. 10 on Interbrand's list last year, for example.)
The question is, what will happen to the thousands of Kodak employees who have survived years of cuts? (WSJ)
