Mortgage, Government and BMO Capital Markets Hiring

By julie steinberg

Tip: Banks Hiring on Mortgage Demand

Low mortgage rates have fueled the demand for refinancing, which in turn has prompted demand for underwriters, processors and closers at various lenders. Last fall and winter, lenders laid off thousands of employees when mortgage rates increased; now, those lenders are courting their former workers. Wells Fargo will hire 90 for permanent positions in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul region. Mortgage modification is also seeing action: Chase Bank will hire 700 for one of its Texas mortgage modification centers.

Tip: Government Hiring in Full Swing after Budget Freeze

Now that the government's no longer in the throes of a budget crisis, hiring is underway for positions at various finance agencies. The Senate Banking Committee approved President Obama's nominations of Martin Gruenberg to lead the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and Thomas Curry to lead the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. The panel approved five more regulatory nominees, but not at all the hiring is just taking place at the top. The SEC, CFTC, CFPB and other agencies are on the hunt for hundreds of qualified applicants.

Tip: BMO Expands U.S. Investment Banking Groups

Bank of Montreal announced four hires last week to expand its U.S. investment banking financial institutions group (FIG). The firm is increasing coverage of financial clients across the country and needs talent for the FIG group. FIG also established a sector devoted to insurance, for which the company will make hiring announcements soon. BMO has been adding American talent since the financial crisis and will continue to do so in the coming months.
