Baltimore-based Legg Mason Inc. is a global asset management company whose subsidiaries provide investment management and related services, mutual funds and other investment vehicles. It sells both through financial intermediaries and directly to clients. The firm has several affiliated money managers representing a wide range of fund offerings, each marketed under its own brand name.

Bill Miller, chief investment officer of subsidiary Legg Mason Capital Management, is regarded as one of the biggest stars in the industry, but his funds lagged in 2006 and 2007 and then were hammered in the financial crisis of 2008. After cutting 200 jobs in 2008, the company plans to eliminate another 350 positions in 2009 to reduce costs, reducing duplication of services already provided by its affiliates.
