Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company is a mutually owned home and auto insurer based Columbus, Ohio. Its offerings include auto, motorcycle, boat, homeowners, life, commercial insurance, administrative services, annuities, mortgages, mutual funds, pensions, long-term savings plans and health and productivity services.
Steve Rasmussen, who had been chief operating officer, recently succeeded Jerry Jurgenson as chief executive after Jurgenson resigned in 2009. In 2008, the company bought back the 34% stake of the publicly-traded Nationwide Financial Services Inc. that it didn't already own at a price determined months before life-insurance company stocks sunk amid the market downturn.
The company shares its hometown with The Ohio State University and is a supporter of its sports programs. Nationwide Arena is the home of professional hockey's Columbus Blue Jackets. Auto racing's Nationwide Series is one of NASCAR's largest racing series.
