Overview

The Tudor Group is a hedge fund manager based in Greenwich, Conn. Founded by Paul Tudor Jones in 1980, the Tudor Group engages in macro trading, making big bets on major market trends. Jones put the company on the map by heavily shorting the market in anticipation of 1987's Black Monday.

While the firm is highly secretive, Jones is a vocal and influential member of the hedge-fund community. His trading strategies and pronouncements are followed closely by industry observers and colleagues. One oft-quoted Jones pronouncement comes from a January 2000 interview he gave to ABACUS, a consulting firm with a media arm: "And then at the end of the day, the most important thing is how good are you at risk control. Ninety-percent of any great trader is going to be the risk control." In other words, the Tudor Group's strategy is to play great defense rather than great offense.
