Overview
TPG Capital, one of the largest private equity firms in the world, has more
than $50 billion of capital under management. In addition to private equity, the firm focuses on venture
capital, public equity and debt investing. TPG -- once known as Texas Pacific Group -- is based in Fort Worth
and San Francisco. A blue-chip firm, TPG is known as a savvy technology investor and a contrarian.
TPG
has ownership stakes in a wide variety of companies, from luxury retailer Neiman Marcus to Harrah's casinos.
TPG also has the dubious distinction of having made one of the more ill-timed private-equity deals in history:
its $1.35 billion investment in thrift Washington Mutual, just months before it was seized by U.S. regulators
and sold off to JPMorgan Chase & Co..
Billionaire co-founder David Bonderman is
one of the most influential figures in PE. He owns a piece of the Boston Celtics, along with other PE
investors, and also sits on the boards of the Grand Canyon Trust and the World Wildlife Fund.
Recruiting
While TPG Capital deals often make
for splashy headlines, the firm maintains a low online profile. Its web site is mum about its talent needs,
much less its hiring practices.
