Overview

Oppenheimer Holdings Inc. is a New York-based middle-market boutique investment bank and full-service broker-dealer, serving high-net-worth investors, individuals, businesses and institutions. Its businesses include retail securities brokerage, institutional sales and trading, investment banking for corporate and public finance, research, market-making, and investment-advisory and asset-management services. The company, which has a U.S. broker dealer, recently said it planned to incorporate in Delaware to become eligible for tax benefits and the U.S. Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).

The company acquired CIBC World Markets’ U.S. investment-banking business in 2008 and building out its investment bank. The Massachusetts State Securities Division, Massachusetts' securities regulator, has accused Oppenheimer executives of allegedly selling $3 million in auction-rate securities from their personal holdings two weeks ahead of that market's collapse. Oppenheimer denies the allegations and plans to defend itself vigorously.

Oppenheimer recently has been hiring senior investment bankers in New York and elsewhere, often at the managing director level. The company is also courting financial advisers with "above average payouts and highly competitive bonus programs."
