Boston-based Bain Capital LLC is one of the largest private equity firms in the U.S. In addition to PE, it manages hedge funds and credit funds. In an effort to enter the investment management business, Bain recently teamed with Hellman & Friedman LLC attempt to acquire the former Lehman's Brothers' asset management business, Neuberger Berman Group LLC. But it was sold at auction to Neuberger management.
Bain firm is regarded as one of the shrewdest private equity investors and is known for its operating capabilities. Its core private-equity funds charge some of the highest fees in the business.
The firm is an offshoot of consulting firm Bain & Co., founded in 1984 by Mitt Romney, who went on to become Massachusetts Governor and later a candidate for the 2008 U.S. Republican presidential nomination. The standard of discipline that he set continues on. Friday golf outings and after-hours beers are a rarity, and 80-hour workweeks are more the norm.
