Thomson Reuters was formed by the 2008 acquisition of Reuters PLC by Thomson Corp. They made a complementary fit. Reuters provided prices for the foreign exchange, bond, and stock markets, serving traders and salesmen in investment banks. Thomson's customers tended to be money managers, hedge funds and other investors.
The company's principal shareholder is the Woodbridge Co. Ltd., the Toronto-based investment vehicle for the Thomson family.
