Overview

Thomson Reuters Corp. is a news and information publisher, selling data to professionals in a variety of fields, including financial services and law. The company is organized in two divisions: Markets, its financial and media businesses, and Professional, its legal, tax and accounting, health-care and science businesses. Markets is the larger of the two and serves financial services and corporate professionals. Reuters Media serves the professional and consumer-media markets. Professional includes its businesses in the legal, tax and accounting, scientific and health-care sectors. The company is based in New York City's Times Square and operates in 93 countries.

Thomson Reuters was formed by the 2008 acquisition of Reuters PLC by Thomson Corp. They made a complementary fit. Reuters provided prices for the foreign exchange, bond, and stock markets, serving traders and salesmen in investment banks. Thomson's customers tended to be money managers, hedge funds and other investors.

The company's principal shareholder is the Woodbridge Co. Ltd., the Toronto-based investment vehicle for the Thomson family.

The company has been on a hiring tear in India and China, and recruiting worldwide for television, mobile offerings and other new products.
