Overview
CIGNA Corp., based in Philadelphia, is the fourth-largest insurer in the U.S. based on number of members. Its subsidiaries are providers of health-care and related benefits, most offered through the workplace, including health-care products and services, group disability, life and accident insurance, and workers' compensation case management and related services.
Cigna leadership has embraced Six Sigma business management, in part to bring order to the jumble of processes and systems that have been amassed through numerous mergers and acquisitions over the years. Chief executive H. Edward Hanway has earned a Six Sigma blue belt certification.
Hanway is retiring after 10 years at the helm. He has been outspoken about the need for greater transparency in health-care quality and cost information. He serves on the advisory board of the March of Dimes Foundation, whose WalkAmerica fundraiser draws a big crowd from Cigna. President and Chief Operating Officer David Cordani becomes CEO in 2010.
