Liberty Mutual is the fifth-largest property and casualty insurer and second-largest surety business in the U.S. The Boston-based company grew considerably after its 2008 takeover of Safeco Corp.
The company has a strong culture of responsibility and declares its mission as to "help people live safer, more secure lives." No surprise here, as LM is owned by its policyholders, and not publicly traded. So when the company preaches responsibility, it's easy to believe that ownership is committed to that ethic. This message is hammered home all over the company's Web site and is reinforced by all of the programs LM funds in the various communities in which it operates, such as Responsible Sports and Coach of the Year.
