Liberty Mutual, the fifth-largest insurance company in the U.S. since its 2008 takeover of Safeco, has a strong culture of responsibility. The company declares its mission as to "help people live safer, more secure lives." No surprise here, as LM is owned by its policyholders, and not publicly traded. So when the company preaches responsibility, it's easy to believe that ownership is committed to that ethic. This message is hammered home all over the company's Web site and is reinforced by all of the programs LM funds in the various communities in which it operates, such as Responsible Sports and Coach of the Year.
