Overview

Capital One Financial Corp. is a diversified banking company based in McLean, Va., known best as a credit-card issuer. The eighth-largest bank by deposits, Capital One is focused primarily on consumer and commercial lending and deposit origination.

Capital One made its name in the direct marketing of no-fee credit cards and in recent years has transformed itself into a bank. While it sidestepped the mortgage mess, observers expect that the credit crisis will hit the bank harder than competitors because it's a big consumer lender.

The bank is known for its data-driven, analytical culture. It has grown quickly since its founding in 1988 but in recent years has experienced its share of downsizings. Capital One repaid the $3.55 billion in TARP funds that it had received from the U.S. Treasury Department at the height of the financial crisis.
