Capitol Federal Financial is a savings and loan and mid-tier mutual holding company based in Topeka, Kan. Its subsidiary Capitol Federal Savings Bank is a savings bank with 40 branches in Kansas that also does mortgage banking and related business.
The Midwest thrift is considered well-managed compared to other financial institutions. It avoided the risky mortgages and markets that slammed many of its bigger rivals. The bank got its moment in the limelight in 2008 when the Today Show praised it in a flattering segment as "the little bank that could" which stuck to lending standards during the boom in contrast to banking giants that received bailouts from the federal government.
President and chief executive John B. Dicus is a third-generation banker, taking over as chairman from his father.
