Aflac Inc. is a holding company with subsidiaries whose principle business is supplemental health and life insurance. The company is the largest provider of supplemental health insurance for special conditions (cancer, accidents, long-term care, etc.) in the U.S. and the largest provider of individual insurance policies in Japan, the source of most of its revenue. Its name is an acronym for American Family Life Assurance Co.
Its spokesduck with its ubiquitous cranky quack is one of the best-recognized brands in the U.S. Out of concern over brand dilution, the word duck is forbidden in sales email addresses and duck costumes are verboten. The mascot also figures prominently on the company's NASCAR racing team's cars.
CEO Daniel Amos is the son and nephew of the founders of the Columbus, Ga., company. Notably, he was the first public company exec to have his pay approved by a shareholder vote.
