Overview
The Travelers Cos. Inc. is a holding company for a range of businesses providing commercial and personal property and casualty insurance products and services to businesses, government units, associations and individuals, distributed through independent insurance agents and brokers. Travelers is the second-largest writer of commercial property casualty and personal insurance in the U.S. and the second-largest writer of auto and homeowners insurance through independent agents.
Travelers's history of mergers and spinoffs is long and varied. Financial conglomerate Travelers Group, formerly The St. Paul Travelers Cos., merged with Citicorp to form Citigroup in 1998. Then Travelers insurance operations were peeled off in 2002 and ultimately consolidated under the Travelers name. The new Travelers re-acquired the famous red umbrella logo.
The company recently took a hit from record disaster costs following the 2009 storms on the U.S. East Coast and the earthquake in Chile.
