Overview
New York-based Transatlantic Holdings Inc., a holding company, is a property/casualty reinsurer. Its subsidiaries include Transatlantic Reinsurance Co., Trans Re Zurich and Putnam Reinsurance Co. The company offers products directly and through brokers, to insurance and reinsurance companies.
American International Group Inc. recently sold part of its stake in the company. The stake has been for sale since the AIG government bailout in September. AIG's ex-CEO Maurice R. "Hank" Greenberg had served as Transatlantic's chairman, and AIG is also a reinsurance customer of Transatlantic. AIG had pledged Transatlantic shares to help secure its loan from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
