Overview
USAA, a diversified financial services company based in San Antonio, Texas, provides financial planning, insurance, investments and banking products to members of the U.S. military and their families. Its businesses encompass property and casualty insurance, life insurance and annuities, and banking and financial advisory services.
The company was founded as United Services Army Automobile Association by a group of Army officers. Over the years, it has worked to transform what was once a civil service environment to one based on performance and creativity. But make no mistake, a military culture infuses this workplace. Chief executive Josue Robles Jr. is a 28-year veteran of the company and formerly director of the Army budget and Commanding General, 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One).
In a bid to expand, the company has lately extended membership to the families of military members. In 2009, the company plans to consolidate some jobs, adding positions to its home base in San Antonio and its Phoenix, Tampa and Colorado Springs offices, while closing operations in California and Virginia.
Recruiting
USAA's career pages make it clear that veterans and military spouses are likely to find they fit into the company culture. Its tagline, "We know what it means to serve," is much more than just a slogan.
Nearly 20% of employees have military experience. The company's "wounded warriors" recruiting program is an effort to hire severely wounded service men and women.
