Overview
ABRY Partners LLC is a Boston-based private-equity investment firm focused on media, communications, business and information services investments. Since 1989, ABRY completed more than $21 billion of leveraged transactions and other private-equity investments involving about 450 properties. ABRY investors include Hearst Corporations, the New York State Teachers’ Retirement System and the Rockefeller Foundation.
Founders Andrew Banks and Royce Yudkoff had run the media practice at management-consulting firm Bain & Co. prior to starting the firm in 1989. The name of the firm is derived from the initials of Banks and Yudkoff.
One of its more high-profile investments has been -- along with other investors -- in Legendary Pictures, the production company that co-produced Batman blockbuster “Dark Knight” along with Warner Brothers. In 2010, the firm acquired RCN Corp., a Herndon, Virginia-based telecommunications firm. In 2008, ABRY Partners acquired Toronto-based Q9 Networks Inc., a provider of outsourced data center infrastructure for organizations with mission-critical IT operations.
