Overview

Boston Properties Inc. is a self-administered and self-managed real estate investment trust. Through its subsidiary Boston Properties LP it owns and develops office properties in the United States. The company's properties are concentrated in five markets: Boston, Washington, D.C., Manhattan, San Francisco and Princeton, N.J. At the end of 2008 the company owned or had interests in 147 properties.

Chairman Mortimer Zuckerman and chief executive Edward Linde founded the firm in 1970. Zuckerman is also chairman and editor-in-chief of U.S. News & World Report and chairman and publisher of the New York Daily News. Boston Properties’ projects and acquisitions are often high profile. In 2008, it purchased 540 Madison Avenue and Two Grand Central Tower in Manhattan from Macklowe Properties.

The company halted construction on a Manhattan skyscraper earlier this year when lease talks with a prospective tenant fell through. It has a number of other projects underway, including an office, retail and residential project overlooking Boston Harbor to be completed in 2011.
