FelCor Lodging Trust Inc. is a real estate investment trust that owns interests in 88 hotels and resorts in 23 U.S. states and Canada. The Irving, Texas-based company’s portfolio consists mostly of "upper upscale" hotels, according to the company's Web site. Its brands include Embassy Suites Hotels, Doubletree, Hilton, Marriott Hotels & Resorts, Renaissance Hotels & Resorts, Sheraton, Westin and Holiday Inn.
While FelCor’s overall portfolio grew market share by an average of more than 3% in 2008, the REIT cut its dividend by 57% amid the financial downturn. It also completed a 35,000-square-foot convention center next to its Hilton Myrtle Beach Resort, among other projects. In 2009, FelCor finished a $45 million project to transform its San Francisco Union Square hotel from a Crowne Plaza to a Marriott.
FelCor’s culture can be glimpsed in one of its annual company events -- the Chairman’s Luncheon. Chairman Tom Corcoran started this tradition where every other month, a handful of employees are selected to cook lunch for the entire company. The meal is made from scratch, based on a different theme, given to them the day of the lunch. The team works together to shop for ingredients and spends the morning cooking together.
