The Government Employees Insurance Co., widely known as GEICO, provides auto insurance, motorcycle insurance and emergency road service. The Chevy Chase, Md., company is a subsidiary of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. GEICO, the fourth largest auto insurer in the U.S., also offers homeowners, renters, and life insurance products written by nonaffiliated insurance companies. Other areas of coverage include: flood insurance, personal umbrella protection, overseas insurance, and identity theft protection. In 2009, GEICO passed the 9 million policyholder mark and the company’s assets have reached $24.4 billion.
The company offers programs that recognize associates' contributions, both inside and outside of the office. Actuaries who pass their CAS exams are eligible for special bonuses; individuals participating in its tuition reimbursement program are recognized for receiving degrees; and each year Geico presents volunteer service awards to honor employees’ contributions to the community.
The company's brand mascot, the GEICO gecko, has become a pop-culture icon with thousands of YouTube, MySpace and other fan Web pages. Its GEICO Cavemen commercials have also gained their own popular following.
