Overview

SLM Corp., known as Sallie Mae, is the largest student lender in the U.S. The Reston, Va.-based company provides funding, delivery and servicing support for education loans in the U.S. through the Federal Family Education Loan Program and through nonfederally guaranteed Private Education Loan programs. Its services include student loan and guarantee servicing, loan default aversion and defaulted loan collections, and providing processing capabilities and information technology to educational institutions, as well as 529 college savings plan program management, transfer and servicing agent services, and administrative services, through Upromise Investments Inc. and Upromise Investment Advisors LLC.

Sallie Mae was created in 1972 as a government-sponsored entity, but it terminated its ties to the federal government in 2004. The company is now grappling with a budget proposal by the Obama administration that would diminish the role of private lenders in federal student loans. Sallie's business model would shift away from being a lender to being an originator and service provider.
