REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
This position will report to our Vice President of U.S. Client Services and Sales.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
With increased recognition of the importance of Asia's role in globally diversified investment portfolios and a growing client base, we are seeking an individual to join the U.S. Client Services & Sales team as a relationship manager. Clients will include independent registered investment advisors (RIAs), family offices, institutions and consultants invested in the Matthews Asia Funds.
The position requires a solid understanding of the RIA and institutional landscape, a familiarity with various custodial platforms, and a broad understanding of international and Asia investment strategies (mutual funds, ETFs, alternative investments).
This individual will follow institutional client management processes. This entails outlining the opportunities, risks, and specific strategies for each relationship. The individual will be responsible for the setting and achievement of client goals which translate into growth in Matthews' assets under management.
While being responsible for his/her own relationships, this individual will work closely with other San Francisco-based U.S. and global sales and client services professionals who serve a broad array of institutional and financial intermediaries, including consultants and manager research professionals, independent RIAs, bank and broker/dealer-affiliated advisors, and private banks. The individual will also work closely with Matthews' marketing and investment teams.
This position will be based in Matthews' headquarters in San Francisco. Occasional travel will typically be in conjunction with industry conferences, Matthews-hosted events (eg, educational roundtables) and one-on-one meetings.
The ideal candidate should have prior relationship management experience at an asset management firm and demonstrate a high degree of integrity, professionalism, attention to detail, and strategic thinking. Strong business writing and oral presentation skills are important, as is a strong understanding and passion for investing in Asia.
Successful candidates will have demonstrable:
•Understanding of the RIA and institutional industry-including platforms, custodians, and operational dynamics-as well as a broad set of organizations
•Affinity for strategic thinking and consultative relationship management, including success in reaching cross selling goals
•Ability to outline and execute on strategic client plans, which includes setting and measuring against milestones and increasing assets under management
•Capacity to build positive and effective internal relationships-with U.S. and global business development peers, marketing, investment team, and legal/operations
•Experience with broad global asset allocation topics and in representing global/international investment strategies
•Long-term conviction for Asia, general understanding of Asian cultures, and intellectual curiosity about the region
•High level of integrity, honesty, diligence and loyalty

•Excellent (written and verbal) communication and presentation skills
QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires:
•Minimum 5 years asset management experience
•Bachelors degree, Masters degree and/or CFA preferred
•Ability to grow, develop and maintain working relationships with various levels of decision makers (CIO, directors of research, international equity analysts, advisors) across a wide range of organizations
•Ability to persuade opinion on Asia's role within global asset allocation, and position Matthews strategies in a concise and compelling manner
•Strategic mindset and timely administrating of client plans, call reports, and marketing initiatives
•Excellent (written and verbal) communication and presentation skills
•Excellent client and co-worker references
•Series 6 or 7 and 63 licenses
