Job Description

CalPERS seeks an Investment Officer III to work under the general direction of the Portfolio Manager, Absolute Return Strategies. The Investment Officer III assigned to the position identified above demonstrates the CalPERS Core Values (Quality, Respect, Integrity, Openness, Accountability, and Balance), works well as a member of a team, and takes initiative in effectively performing the following functions:

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Manage relationships for a portion of the ARS hedge fund and fund of hedge fund investments

• Serve as primary contact between the ARS hedge fund and fund of hedge fund manager and CalPERS

• Oversee and monitor of assigned funds and managers to ensure adherence to specified strategies and assess performance

• Leads ARS Investment Officers on manager oversight issues

• Perform due-diligence of managers, strategies and tools

• Coordinate with ARS program partners and advisors to develop investment ideas

• Report to the ARS Advisory Board on hedge fund due-diligence, performance, and related matters pertaining to individual ARS program investments and related topics as required

Minimum Requirements and Experience:

• Bachelor's degree from college preferably with major work in business administration, economics, finance, mathematics, or a closely related field.

• Five years of increasingly responsible investment analysis experience for a public agency or private financial institution, insurance company, pension fund, endowment fund, investment firm, real estate development and investment firm, or private corporation or entity having a major investment management program

• Ability to independently analyze, research and evaluate policies, procedures relating to investing in Hedge Funds.

Desirable Qualifications:

• Prior hedge fund experience

• MBA or possession of an advanced degree in finance or another applicable technical field

• Professional certification such as CPA, CFA, or CAIA

• Ability to prioritize tasks, balancing the needs/demands of multiple constituencies and competing deadlines while remaining flexible

• Ability to perform effectively in a highly complex, open, and transparent public setting

• Ability to work independently and under short time constraints

• Familiarity with equity risk models, calculations and attention to detail

• Project management and reporting experience in an institutional investment management context

• MS Suite experience, particularly Excel experienc
