The System Architect will be responsible for the implementation of technology solutions requiring integration of multiple platforms, operating systems, storage, and applications across the enterprise. This person will also develop and maintain the framework and corresponding guidelines and documentation for the integration and implementation of the technical standards supporting the technology solutions. The System Architect will report to the System Services Manager and will provide expertise of the most complex nature on decisions and priorities regarding the enterprise’s overall systems architecture. It is expected that this person will perform the most senior-level functions: troubleshoot technical problems of the most complex nature; develop and present high-level technical documentation; develop and manage technical project plans; act as the New York Power Authority’s subject matter expert in matters of system platforms which includes purchase, installation, design, configuration, maintenance, and implementation of best practice methodologies specific to our SharePoint landscape and our RDBMS environments including SQL Server and Oracle; specifies the logical structure and behavior of the platform system software in response to the functional business requirements, specifying the infrastructure and platform required to meet the quality of service requirement for any project; seeks out the commonality of solutions and designs systems that adhere to processes and standards across all designed solutions; ensures that IT is poised in the future for supporting business requirements by aligning IT and business functional goals and strategy with platform solutions and technology, this may include the recommendation of external remote service providers or supplemental staff. The System Architect works closely with all other IT groups. This person will work closely with the Infrastructure group to ensure delivered and designed systems best utilize Infrastructure resources for virtualization, backup and recovery, and storage. The System Architect will work with the Application Developers to ensure designed systems adhere to best practices and are built in accordance to NYPA's standards. The Application Portfolio groups will receive the System Architect's expertise in the hand-over of production systems and in troubleshooting maintenance issues such as performance. The System Architect is ultimately responsible to ensure NYPA's platforms supported by the Systems Services group are optimally configured, stable, and available to support NYPA's operations. The System Architect is fully knowledgeable and invested in NYPA's policies, operating standards, and business objectives. Required Skills The successful candidate will possess strong leadership and customer-service skills. The System Architect sets the direction for the technology roadmap of the Authority and therefore has a large responsibility to lead members of all groups to that common goal. The Architect sees the value of all levels of staff and effectively engages all. The System Architect sets the technology which, in turn, determines the technology paths staff will need in future training. It will be incumbent on the architect to ensure that NYPA is well situated with a workforce able to implement that direction. In addition, the primary minimal experience required for this position includes: •Manage and administer multi-server SharePoint farms •Manage and administer multi-server SQL Server clusters •Working knowledge of infrastructure configurations, including virtualization opportunities, storage, backup and recovery options; •Develop, scope, maintain, and manage technical projects and project plans; •Draft and maintain Information Technology Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Plans specific to the System Services platforms; •Research, evaluate and recommend new technologies based upon functional and business requirements; •Provide technical direction and leadership to developers and product support analysts ensuring that processes and procedures are adhered to while ensuring systems are secure and stable; •Act as liaison to user department’s functional business areas to determine system requirements. Also meets with user areas to determine production requirements, incident reporting and problem areas. •Investigate and lead staff or teams in the investigation of the most technically complex software and hardware problems related to the production environment and coordinate problem resolution with vendors and in-house personnel. •Provide consultative direction to senior level IT staff •Direct performance of outages, hardware maintenance, software maintenance, etc. •Specify, configure, maintain and administer clustered server environment for SharePoint and SQL Server. Provide recommendations for migration of existing systems into a more robust high availability solution and execute those recommendations. •Ability to forge relationships to best align resources which enable the successful completion of work •Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills. While versed in both the details and the broad picture, the System Architect must speak to the audience at levels appropriate to their understanding and their job. •Strong negotiating skills are critical both within the Authority and in dealing with outside vendors Experience Required The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or similar technical discipline with a minimum of twelve years of IT experience serving in strong technical leadership roles. The candidate will have expertise knowledge of SharePoint and RDBMS systems, including but not limited to SQL Server and Oracle. The candidate must have demonstrated decision-making, analytical, organizational, communication, and problem solving abilities. The candidate must be willing and able to work after hours and weekends as required.
